A dear friend discovered my blogs and asked what drove me into this space. A fair Question. I explained that I had been a physician-researcher, in the nutritional, prescription drug, and medical device arena for over 30 years. I was passionate about my work, published in peer-reviewed literature, and I am an FDA Advisory Panel Member and a Board of Directors member, among other accomplishments.
But the real driver behind the blog is being able to tell my story. In addition to the credits above, I am a cancer survivor. True. A cancer survivor against one of the most terminal and killer of cancers – Pancreatic Cancer.
Mine was an odd presentation. My right lower leg had an inflamed vein. We call this phlebitis. The phlebitis continued to increase in severity and it started moving up my leg. There was concern about the possibility of the phlebitis reaching one of my major vessels and spinning off a clot, which could go into my lungs. So, the plan was to ligate the vessel, which was done in a simple fashion. But the question remained as to why this phlebitis popped up in the first place. A very astute colleague of mine recognized the sign immediately as potentially Trousseau’s sign of malignancy, where there is recurrent migratory thrombophlebitis associated with an underlying hidden cancer. And so it was. Further diagnostics lead to the discovery of a tumor in the tail of my pancreas.
It was late February 2008. I was shaken to my core.
My son’s birthday was coming up within days, so my wife and I kept mum on the cancer news until his special day was over.
Immediately thereafter, however, I went into self-preservation mode! I had a great team attending to me. An oncologist, a surgeon, a radiation oncologist, a primary care doctor and a gastroenterologist. Within a few days, I was starting down the path of cancer treatment and recovery, not to mention survival!! Despite the stellar team providing me with tumor removal, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and rehabilitation, I buried myself in the scientific data supporting nutritional supplementation in cancer.
I discovered Resveratrol. I became a believer. I have taken Resveratrol (and thenTrans-Resveratrol) religiously for over 15 years. Every day, together with my other important antioxidants, Zinc and Vitamin D3, I remain cancer-free today. As things improved, I've always maintained the highest quality, which today is 98% PureTrans-Resveratrol.
